On September 26, 2024, Hong Kong welcomed a new pair of giant pandas, An An and Ke Ke, who traveled from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to Hong Kong International Airport. Their arrival stirred excitement among the public, with extensive decorations and enthusiastic crowds anticipating the “national treasures.” After landing, the pandas were transferred to a special bus that took them to Ocean Park Hong Kong, where they will undergo a 30-day quarantine before being introduced to visitors in December.

An An and Ke Ke, both born in June 2019, will contribute to the total of six giant pandas residing in Hong Kong, making it home to the largest population of these animals outside of mainland China. The convoy carrying the pandas was escorted into Ocean Park with great fanfare, featuring local police support, cheerful panda-themed decorations, and a band, creating an inviting atmosphere for the pandas’ new beginning. Members of the crowd expressed joy and excitement over the pandas’ arrival, reflecting the public's fondness for the species.

The significance of this arrival is heightened by the historical context; Hong Kong received its first pair of giant pandas in 1999, and since then, the locale has developed a special bond with these animals, particularly following the deaths of previous pandas, Jia Jia and Le Le. Ocean Park Chairman Paulo Pong Kin-Yee assured that the facility is well-prepared to provide a nurturing environment, with dedicated exhibition spaces and staff to support the well-being of the pandas. This event aligns with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, coinciding with numerous celebrations occurring in the city.
