Taiwan's Future and the DPP's "Taiwan Independence" Rhetoric
On Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed the issue of Taiwan's future and the recent secessionist rhetoric from Taiwan's regional leader Lai Ching-te and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Zhu emphasized that Taiwan's future lies in reunification with mainland China, a decision that can only be made by the 1.4 billion Chinese people, including the 23 million Taiwanese compatriots. She condemned the DPP's continued pursuit of "Taiwan independence" by relying on foreign forces, highlighting the risks it poses to the Taiwanese people and the potential for conflict.
Zhu's remarks were a direct response to Lai's recent statements advocating for strengthening Taiwan's "defense capabilities" and his secessionist rhetoric. She criticized Lai's actions as a manifestation of his "stubborn 'Taiwan independence' mentality" and a deliberate attempt to provoke confrontation.
Zhu reiterated that national reunification is the shared aspiration of all Chinese people and a crucial step towards the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. She warned the DPP authorities that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end and their actions will ultimately be punished.
Analysts believe that Lai's recent provocations are aimed at consolidating support for the DPP's secessionist agenda and signaling their commitment to "self-defense" to the US in hopes of securing additional aid. However, the US views Taiwan primarily as a pawn in its strategy to contain China, as evidenced by the recent delivery of "unserviceable" military equipment to the island.
Zhu condemned the DPP's willingness to accept these substandard items and serve as an "ATM machine" for the US, squandering the hard-earned money of the Taiwanese people. She warned that these actions not only fail to ensure the safety of the Taiwanese people but also push them closer to the brink of war.
The DPP's recent provocations have sparked criticism within Taiwan, with some politicians and citizens expressing concerns about escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
