On Sunday, in an incident near Yellowstone National Park, two archery hunters found themselves in a dangerous situation when a grizzly bear attacked them. The hunters were pursuing elk in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest when the bear knocked one of the men to the ground and bit him.
In reaction to the aggression, both hunters discharged their semi-automatic pistols, resulting in the bear's death. After the attack, they quickly contacted emergency services, and the injured man was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where he received treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Idaho Fish and Game Department and other local emergency services arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Upon evaluation, conservation officers determined that the hunters acted in self-defense and justified the action taken against the bear. Supervisor Matt Pieron expressed his relief that both individuals survived the ordeal, extending his wishes for a swift recovery to the injured hunter.
Despite the encounter, it is crucial to note that grizzly bears are a protected species under the Endangered Species Act in the continental United States. The Idaho Fish and Game Department took this opportunity to remind other hunters in the region to be aware of the potential for bear encounters, particularly in northern Idaho and the Greater Yellowstone area, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife.
