An incident involving a Florida deputy's firearm took place on August 29 when he inadvertently left his weapon in the restroom of a RaceTrac convenience store in Oviedo. The officer, having removed his bulletproof vest and gun belt, realized the gun was missing after responding to a service call. Upon returning to the gas station to check the restroom, he was unable to locate the firearm.
Two individuals, identified as Chance Byron, 26, and Damari Dennis, 23, allegedly discovered the firearm, which was a Sig Sauer P320 valued at approximately $600, and quickly listed it for sale on CashApp for just $40. Surveillance footage captured both men entering the restroom shortly after the deputy and one of them was seen concealing an object in the waistband of his pants as they exited.
Law enforcement officials tracked down the suspects through a license tag search, where they claimed to have found the gun in a toilet paper roll within the restroom. Importantly, neither of the men informed law enforcement or the gas station employees about their discovery. They were arrested the following day by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, and the firearm was subsequently recovered.
Dennis is facing a total of 13 charges, including grand theft of a firearm, dealing in stolen property, and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, as he was on probation at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, Byron faces charges for grand theft of a firearm, failure to report lost or abandoned property, and dealing in stolen goods. The Independent has reached out to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office for additional information regarding the case.

This is a perfect example of why police should not be carrying firearms around in public all the time.

Thankful these individuals found the gun and turned it in to the proper authorities. Could have ended much worse otherwise.

Instead of focusing on the individuals who found the gun, let's talk about why the deputy even had his gun with him at a gas station.

This story only reinforces my belief that law enforcement needs better training on gun safety and handling.
