Police in Houston have detained Kyliel Denzel Arceneaux, a 21-year-old suspect linked to the murder of a 90-year-old Navy veteran during a carjacking incident. He faces several charges, including capital murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence.
The tragic event unfolded when Nelson Beckett was approached while sitting in his vehicle at the Lone Star Senior Living Apartments. Following an initial conversation with the suspect, Beckett was shot and forcibly removed from his car, which the assailant then drove away in, running over him in the process. After abandoning the vehicle at another apartment complex about ten minutes away, police were able to locate it shortly thereafter.
In the wake of this violent crime, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a reward of $10,000 in addition to the existing $5,000 offered by Crime Stoppers for information leading to the capture of the responsible party. Investigators were able to identify Arceneaux as a suspect, resulting in his arrest on Tuesday, after which he was booked into the Harris County Jail, as reported by KPRC.
Tim Beckett, the victim's son, shared with ABC13 that his father leaves behind two children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A veteran of the Navy, Nelson Beckett had a diverse career in sales and was actively involved in his local church community.
In a heartfelt tribute, Tami Freund, Beckett’s daughter, remembered him as a man who loved to share jokes and bring laughter to people's lives, emphasizing his willingness to help those in need. She described him as someone who cherished his family deeply, expressing gratitude for their close-knit and loving Christian family.
Longtime friend Steve Sandifer expressed his disbelief over the shocking nature of Beckett's death, contrasting it with a sentiment he might have felt had he heard Beckett passed away peacefully in his sleep. He noted Beckett's legacy of faith and the wonderful life he had lived, reflecting the disbelief and sorrow surrounding this tragic event.
