Chinese President Xi Jinping Meets with Comorian President Azali Assoumani
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Comorian President Azali Assoumani in Beijing on Monday. Assoumani was in Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
During the meeting, the two leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. Xi noted that next year will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the Comoros, highlighting their strong relationship built on equality, solidarity, and cooperation.
Xi expressed China's willingness to engage in poverty reduction cooperation with the Comoros and support the Indian Ocean island nation in leveraging its geographic and maritime resources for development. He also pledged China's assistance in helping the Comoros achieve its goal of eliminating malaria by 2025 and expand practical bilateral cooperation in various areas, including economy, trade, investment, infrastructure, marine fisheries, and climate change.
President Assoumani expressed the Comoros' commitment to strengthening and elevating relations with China, aiming to make Comoros-China ties an example of Africa-China cooperation. He emphasized the Comoros' readiness to enhance communication and coordination with China within multilateral frameworks to promote solidarity among developing countries and facilitate the resolution of regional conflicts through dialogue.
