On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, addressed the recent tensions arising from the Philippines’ activities at Xianbin Reef in the South China Sea. He stated that while China prefers to manage disputes through discussions and consultations, it has its limits when it comes to provocation, particularly regarding the Philippines' alleged illegal anchoring of a coast guard vessel in the uninhabited area since April.
Wu criticized the Philippines for attempting to establish a long-term presence at Xianbin Reef, urging its government to promptly remove its ship and personnel and to revert the area to an unoccupied state without leaving behind any infrastructure. The situation escalated when the Philippine coast guard vessel No. 9701 reportedly entered the lagoon of Xianbin Reef, and its subsequent resupply missions were contested by the China Coast Guard.
Furthermore, the spokesperson countered claims made by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, which argued that China's actions were detrimental to the safety of its crew and infringed upon international law. Wu reaffirmed China's sovereignty over Nansha Islands and the surrounding waters, emphasizing that the Philippine vessel's presence was a serious breach of Chinese sovereignty and international regulations.
Wu also expressed that the maneuvers of the Philippine Coast Guard have not only undermined China’s territorial integrity but have also prompted significant opposition from neighboring countries. He characterized these actions as akin to opening a "Pandora's Box," leading to escalating disputes in the region. He reiterated that China would uphold necessary measures in response to these incursions, advocating for a return to dialogue while maintaining a firm stance on protecting its rights and interests in the area.
