Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu, two Indian para-athletes, clinched silver and bronze medals respectively in the men's high jump T6 final at the Paris Paralympics. This double podium finish marked a significant achievement for India.
Sharad Kumar secured the silver medal with a leap of 1.88m, while Mariyappan Thangavelu settled for bronze with a jump of 1.85m. American athlete Ezra Frech rewrote the Paralympic record with a remarkable jump of 1.94m, securing the gold medal.
The competition began with all three Indian athletes clearing the 1.77m mark with ease. However, reigning Paralympic champion Sam Grewe of the United States was eliminated after failing to clear the same height.
As the bar was raised, Sharad Kumar displayed flawless technique to clear 1.81m, followed by Mariyappan and Shailesh Kumar. Mariyappan then upped the ante by clearing 1.85m, a personal best for him. Shailesh matched his compatriot's effort, also achieving a personal best.
With the bar raised to 1.88m, Sharad Kumar broke the Paralympic record in the T42 category, previously set by Mariyappan in Tokyo. However, he was unable to clear 1.91m or 1.94m, settling for the silver medal. Mariyappan secured the bronze with his 1.85m jump, while Shailesh narrowly missed the podium finish.
