In a significant move, President Droupadi Murmu has granted Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena the authority to create and appoint members to any authority, board, commission, or other statutory bodies under relevant laws applicable in the national capital. This decision was confirmed through a gazette notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which emphasized that the LG would exercise these powers under specific provisions of the Constitution and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act.

This delegation of powers could lead to increased friction between the LG and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, potentially impacting governance in the union territory. Meanwhile, the President has also approved the formation of the 23rd Law Commission of India, which is set to operate from September 1, 2024, until August 31, 2027. The commission will include a full-time Chairperson, four members, and various ex-officio and part-time members, focusing on assessing and suggesting reforms to enhance the legal framework within India.
