Jiang Chengjun, a 56-year-old fugitive and deputy manager of Haitong Securities, has been returned to China, as reported by the country's leading anti-corruption agencies on Wednesday. He had fled the nation in July 2024, shortly after the Shanghai Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervisory Commission initiated an investigation against him.
The coordinated efforts of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China, alongside the National Supervisory Commission, led to Jiang's apprehension abroad. The Fugitive Repatriation and Asset Recovery Office of the Central Anti-Corruption Coordination Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security, took significant steps to ensure his return. Authorities in Shanghai worked hand in hand with international law enforcement to facilitate this process.
An official from the Fugitive Repatriation and Asset Recovery Office reiterated the dedication to global anti-corruption efforts and the importance of improving mechanisms designed to pursue and recover fugitives. The official asserted that corrupt individuals who attempt to evade justice will ultimately face apprehension, regardless of their location.
The Fugitive Repatriation and Asset Recovery Office, established in June 2014, has notably initiated the annual "Sky Net" campaign to capture those involved in corruption and related offenses. This year's initiative, which commenced in March, aims to maintain the momentum in repatriating fugitives and recovering assets, while reinforcing systems to govern cross-border corruption effectively, thereby preventing further escapes and bolstering joint efforts in this area.
