Last week in Shanghai, a new initiative was launched by officials from China and Africa aimed at accelerating green development and tackling climate change. This initiative, known as the Shanghai Action Initiative on Sustainable Energy Transition and Green Investment and Financing, was introduced during a roundtable forum that took place ahead of the upcoming 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
The roundtable included participants from government sectors, experts, and representatives from both China and Africa, and was organized by the China-Africa Environmental Cooperation Center, along with Tongji University and the World Resources Institute. The discussions focused on strategies for collaboration in optimizing energy structures, implementing low-carbon technologies, developing green finance solutions, and establishing green skills in both regions.
During the forum, there was a clear consensus on the urgency of moving away from fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy sources as a vital part of climate action. The participants stressed the necessity for increased funding in green technologies, infrastructure projects, and the formulation of sustainable energy policies.
