Alex de Minaur Reaches US Open Quarterfinals, Continues Stellar Grand Slam Season
Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur has advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open, defeating fellow Aussie Jordan Thompson in a hard-fought four-set battle. This marks de Minaur's third consecutive grand slam quarterfinal appearance, a feat not achieved by any other Australian player since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004-05.
De Minaur, who entered the tournament with low expectations due to a recent hip injury, has steadily regained his form and confidence throughout the tournament. He dominated the first set against Thompson, winning 6-0, but faced a tougher challenge in the following sets. Thompson fought back to win the second set 3-6 and threatened to force a deciding set before de Minaur ultimately prevailed 7-5 in the fourth set.
With this victory, de Minaur becomes the last Australian player remaining in the men's singles draw. He will face England's Jack Draper in the quarterfinals, aiming to reach his first grand slam semifinal.
De Minaur's achievement is particularly impressive considering he has accomplished what even former world No. 1 Ash Barty and former US Open champion Samantha Stosur could not during their careers. He is now hoping to emulate Lleyton Hewitt's 2004 US Open run by reaching the final.
The other men's quarterfinals will see Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe face Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov, respectively. Daniil Medvedev will play the winner of the match between Jannik Sinner and Tommy Paul.
In the women's draw, American Emma Navarro will play Spain's Paula Badosa, China's Qinwhen Zheng will play Aryna Sabalenka, Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia will play Karolina Muchová, and American Jessica Pegula will play world number one Iga Świątek.
