Kenji Iwata, the superintendent of education in Nisshin, Aichi, expressed serious concerns regarding the effects of smartphone dependence on family dynamics during a speech to the municipal assembly on September 2. He emphasized that excessive smartphone usage often distracts parents, leading to feelings of loneliness among children who may seek their attention, thereby leading to a deterioration of parent-child relationships.
Iwata, who is about to start a second term in office, discussed broader educational issues beyond compulsory schooling, advocating for environments where children can feel a sense of belonging. He stressed the importance of lifelong education, focusing on helping families understand both the benefits and drawbacks of smartphone usage to foster better communication and connection at home.
In his lengthy address, which lasted around 29 minutes, Iwata also called on adults to take preventative measures to safeguard children's well-being. He encouraged community involvement, urging all adults to support and protect children proactively rather than waiting to criticize schools or government bodies regarding their responsibilities.
