Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, suspended her presidential campaign in January 2023, after failing to gain traction in the Republican primaries. Despite her early exit, some of her supporters remain undecided about who they will vote for in the 2024 election.
Many of Haley's most ardent supporters were moderate, college-educated Republicans and independents who were skeptical of Donald Trump. These voters, who pollsters called "double haters," were dreading the prospect of having to choose between Trump and President Biden. However, with Biden no longer seeking re-election and Vice President Kamala Harris now the Democratic nominee, the calculus has changed.
Veteran Republican pollster Whit Ayres believes that Haley's voters are now examining the Harris candidacy and will eventually decide where they stand. He notes that neither Harris nor Trump is a perfect fit for these voters, who are likely to make their decision based on a variety of factors, including the candidates' positions on key issues and their overall electability.
