A Tale of Dedication and Discovery
to monitor the growth of each tree and analyze the dynamic changes of the diverse plant life, akin to taking the pulse of this vibrant ecosystem.
Nestled in Northeast China's Jilin province, Changbai Mountain stands as a testament to the country's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1960, the Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve boasts an impressive array of climate types and biological communities, playing host to 2,639 wild plant species and 1,586 wild animal species.
Jia, an engineer at the Changbai Mountain scientific research institute, was drawn to the mountain's pristine wilderness and its potential for scientific discovery. Leaving his hometown in Shanxi province, he dedicated himself to the study and protection of this unique ecosystem.
For eight years, Jia and his colleagues have braved mosquito bites and encounters with wildlife, meticulously monitoring plant resources and protecting endangered species. Equipped with advanced tools like calipers and environmental sensors, they gather data that provides invaluable insights into the delicate balance of nature.
Zhao Lufu, Jia's partner on the field survey, embodies the mountain's transformation from a source of timber to a beacon of sustainable forestry. Once a logger, Zhao transitioned to his new role as a field researcher when the province banned commercial logging in 2015.
This shift marked a turning point for Changbai Mountain. The 2017 baseline survey by the research institute revealed that forest coverage in the reserve had exceeded 95 percent. Additionally, dedicated conservation efforts have led to the successful restoration of seven hectares of Thuja koraiensis, a species listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.
In June 2023, the Changbai Mountain Global Geopark was officially unveiled, drawing international attention to the mountain's natural wonders and the dedicated conservation efforts led by Jia's team.
Despite ongoing challenges posed by climate change and human activity, Jia remains hopeful. He believes that continued research and unwavering commitment to conservation will ensure the preservation of this unique ecosystem for generations to come. As he concludes, "We're fighting for the future.

Jia’s optimism looks good on paper, but reality is much harsher. Are we really addressing the root causes of environmental degradation?

Focusing on one area is not enough. We need a more comprehensive approach to nature conservation across the country.

This feels like a PR stunt rather than genuine conservation. Show me the tangible benefits for local ecosystems!

The establishment of the Changbai Mountain Global Geopark is an excellent way to promote awareness and conservation!

Isn't it ironic that it took years of exploitation to eventually realize we need to protect these forests?
