Vice President Harris' Gun Violence Prevention Office Under Scrutiny
Vice President Kamala Harris, who has campaigned on her record as a tough prosecutor, is facing scrutiny over her oversight of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The House Oversight and Accountability Committee is investigating potential "collusion" between the office and a gun control group founded by billionaire former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The committee alleges that the White House is stonewalling the investigation, refusing to respond to multiple inquiries since June. This includes a failure to provide documents related to the office's communication with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Bloomberg-founded Everytown for Gun Safety.
The controversy centers around a lawsuit filed by the city of Chicago against Glock Inc., a firearms manufacturer. The lawsuit alleges that Glock willfully sold pistols that can be converted into fully automatic weapons, and that the company turned a blind eye to these alterations.
The committee has found that the White House met with representatives from Glock and requested the company change its pistol designs. Additionally, Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt posted on social media about the meeting, raising questions about potential collusion with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
The committee is concerned that the White House is prioritizing targeting a legal gun manufacturer over prosecuting criminals. They are demanding transparency and accountability from the administration.
The controversy could also have implications for the 2024 presidential race, as Vice President Harris' record on gun violence prevention comes under increased scrutiny.
