The United Kingdom's Suspension of Arms Exports to Israel
The United Kingdom has suspended dozens of weapons exports to Israel due to concerns that the arms could be used to violate international law. This decision comes shortly after Hamas murdered six hostages taken from Israel.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy informed lawmakers that the suspension affects approximately 30 of 350 export licenses for equipment, including parts for military aircraft and drones, and items used for ground targeting. Lammy believes this equipment is intended for use in the ongoing conflict in Gaza and poses a "clear risk" of being used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian law.
Despite the suspension, Lammy emphasized that this action is not a determination of guilt or innocence regarding Israel's compliance with international law, nor is it an arms embargo.
Reactions from Israel
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed disappointment with the British government's decision, calling it "disheartening" to impose "sanctions" on export licenses. He highlighted that Israel is currently engaged in a war on multiple fronts, triggered by unprovoked attacks from a "savage terrorist organization." Gallant emphasized that this decision comes at a time when Israel mourns the loss of six hostages brutally executed by Hamas and continues to fight for the return of 101 hostages.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz expressed concern that the U.K.'s decision sends a "problematic message" to the Iranian-backed Hamas terrorist group. He emphasized that Israel is a law-abiding state that adheres to international law and possesses an independent and respected judicial system. Katz expects friendly nations like the U.K. to acknowledge this consistently, especially in light of the recent hostage executions, ongoing negotiations for their release and a ceasefire, and threats from the Iranian regime. He expressed hope for the continuation of the deep friendship between Israel and the U.K.
President Biden's Remarks
President Biden stated to reporters that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not doing enough to secure a hostage deal with Hamas terrorists. This statement follows the murder of 23-year-old Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin and five other hostages by Hamas on Saturday. President Biden and Vice President Harris convened a hostage deal negotiating team in the Situation Room in response to this tragic event.
