North Portland Newspaper Owner Arrested for Alleged Threats
Richard Colvin, the owner of the St. John's Review newspaper in North Portland, has been arrested and charged with making threats to a church receptionist in Alabama. The FBI affidavit details disturbing allegations of harassment and threats of violence against the 77-year-old woman.
Colvin allegedly called the church multiple times, stating his intention to kidnap the receptionist, lock her in a cage, and repeatedly rape her. He also made graphic and offensive remarks about the Methodist Church's stance on LGBTQ+ individuals.
Prior to this incident, Colvin had reportedly harassed law enforcement and religious groups in Oregon. The FBI and Portland Police Bureau were forced to block his number due to the incessant calls.
Colvin's attorney claims he has a history of mental illness and has requested a psychiatric evaluation. The future of the St. John's Review remains uncertain as Colvin awaits his court date.
Anisha Scanlon, the paper's director, is attempting to take over ownership but faces a $10,000 debt. She hopes to distance herself and the paper from the controversy surrounding Colvin.
Gayla Patton, the previous owner, expressed her desire to have no further involvement with the paper, citing the current situation as a "mess.

This is horrifying. How can someone be so cruel and vile? My heart goes out to the victim, and I hope she finds justice.

This is a reminder that we can't ignore hate speech. It can lead to real-world violence.

This is the kind of hate that breeds violence. We need to stand up against bigots like this who spread fear and discrimination.

This is the last thing the St. John's Review needs. I hope they can recover from this and become a force for good in the community.

Disgusting! Threatening violence against a woman and spewing hate is beyond unacceptable. This man shouldn't even own a newspaper, let alone be walking free.

I hope the Portland community comes together to show their support for the victim and stand against this hate.
