Khalid Shaikh Mohammed Accepts Plea Deal, Avoiding Death Penalty
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the 9/11 terror attacks, has agreed to a plea deal that will spare him the death penalty.
Mohammed, along with two accomplices, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, will plead guilty to all charges in exchange for life sentences. This decision has been met with mixed reactions from families of the victims.
Some, like Daniel D'Allara, whose brother was killed on 9/11, expressed disappointment and a desire for the death penalty. Others, like Terry Strada, national chairperson of 9/11 Families United, wished for a full trial.
The plea deal comes after years of delays in the case, including concerns about the use of torture against the defendants and the complexities of trying them at Guantanamo Bay.
While some see the plea deal as a form of accountability, others criticize the slow pace of justice and the continued existence of Guantanamo Bay.
The case against the remaining two 9/11 defendants, Ramzi bin al-Shibh and Ammar al-Baluchi, remains ongoing.
