Hundreds Convicted, Many Officers Injured, Facing Serious Legal Repercussions
Ms. Scott's statement about rioters being convicted was met with laughter from the crowd. Mr. Trump countered by claiming they were convicted under a "tough system." However, this claim is false. Ashli Babbitt, a member of the Capitol mob, was fatally shot by police while attempting to climb through a shattered window. Additionally, eight other deaths have been attributed to the attack.
Over 140 officers sustained injuries that day, many inflicted by rioters attempting to force their way into the Capitol. Several officers described the scene as "medieval." The subsequent criminal investigations have resulted in over a thousand arrests and hundreds of convictions, including charges related to assaulting law enforcement officers.
Despite his self-proclaimed friendship with the police, Mr. Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies in Manhattan and faces further criminal trials. At his rallies, he encourages supporters to "back the blue" while accusing Democrats of failing to support law enforcement. Additionally, Mr. Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to pardon the rioters, whom he has referred to as "hostages" and "patriots," should he be re-elected. He has even considered a blanket pardon for all those charged.
