Recently, during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, two significant migratory bird sanctuaries located in Northeast China's Liaoning province were officially included on the World Heritage List. The two sites, Snake Island within the Laotieshan National Nature Reserve and the Dandong Yalu River Estuary, were celebrated for their rich cultural heritage, historical relevance, and scientific contributions.
Situated in Dalian's Lyushunkou district, Snake Island is recognized as an essential resting point for migratory birds making their way south over the Bohai Strait. The island notably supports an endemic species, the Shedao island pitviper (Gloidyus shedaoensis), which preys on smaller birds during their migration. This remarkable region is home to approximately 20,000 of these venomous snakes, underscoring the island's unique ecological significance.
