China's Siberian Tiger Population Shows Encouraging Recovery

The wild tiger population in China has exhibited a remarkable recovery in recent years, particularly the Siberian tiger, also known as the Northeast tiger. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration announced on World Tiger Day that the number of Siberian tigers has increased from around 27 six years ago to approximately 70.

This positive development is attributed to the establishment of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park in 2017. Located in the southern part of Laoyeling, at the border of Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, the park provides a crucial habitat for these endangered species.

Through dedicated ecological protection efforts, including field patrols, management stations, and monitoring systems, favorable conditions have been created for the survival and reproduction of wild tigers. This has led to a significant increase in the population of both Siberian tigers and leopards. The number of Northeast leopards has also witnessed a rise, from 42 six years ago to 80.

Both the Siberian tiger and leopard are classified as national first-level protected wild animals in China. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as endangered and critically endangered species, respectively, due to their dwindling populations.

The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, spanning 14,100 square kilometers, is the largest tiger habitat in China and the only one with stable breeding families. Its eastern border adjoins the Land of the Leopard National Park in Russia, making it the sole national park in China engaged in cross-border protection cooperation.

The park's efforts have not only benefited tigers and leopards but also contributed to the recovery of other wild animals such as brown bears, sika deer, and roe deer. Additionally, wild plant species like ginseng, matsutake mushrooms, and Chinese yew have shown signs of improvement.

This success story demonstrates the effectiveness of conservation efforts in protecting endangered species and restoring ecological balance. The continued commitment to these initiatives is crucial for ensuring the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures and the preservation of their natural habitat.
