On Thursday evening, China's Ministry of National Defense voiced significant criticism regarding Japan's recently unveiled defense white paper. The ministry accused Japan of using China as a scapegoat to mislead its citizens and the international community, thereby justifying an expansion of its military capabilities. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang expressed firm discontent and opposition to the document, which designated China as Japan's foremost strategic challenge, as discussed in the annual "Defense of Japan 2024," ratified by the Japanese Cabinet on July 12.
The white paper raises concerns about China's military activities, claiming they are extending beyond the "first island chain" to the "second," and warned that tensions in the Taiwan Strait could rise, with China-Russia joint patrols highlighted as a significant issue. In response, Zhang countered these assertions by asserting that China's maritime and aerial operations comply with both international and domestic laws. He reiterated that the Diaoyu Islands and their affiliated territories are inherently Chinese, dismissing external involvement in China's internal matters, including Taiwan's status.
Zhang emphasized that the greatest threat to peace in the Taiwan Strait arises from the actions of "Taiwan independence" separatists and their backers. Reflecting on Japan's historical rule over Taiwan, he urged the country to engage in self-reflection given its past. Moreover, he clarified that China-Russia defense collaboration is non-alliance-based, non-confrontational, and does not target other nations, further aiming to bolster regional and global stability.
The spokesperson outlined China's defense strategy as one that seeks peace, asserting that the country does not pursue confrontation but will confront challenges when necessary. He pointed out that any military advancements are solely aimed at protecting national sovereignty and maintaining peace both domestically and globally. Zhang also criticized Japan for its militaristic heritage and expanding defense budget, questioning how these developments do not raise alarms about a possible resurgence of Japanese aggression.
He cautioned about Japan's military intentions and urged the international community to stay alert. Zhang concluded by urging Japan to learn from its historical mistakes, cease its negative sentiment towards China, refrain from interfering in China's affairs, and adopt a more cautious approach in its military actions to cultivate trust with its Asian neighbors and the global community.
