In the singles tournament, the 16th-seeded Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Quebec, overcame Spain's Cristina Busca in a hard-fought match. The Canadian emerged victorious with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 scoreline, advancing to the third round of the competition. The match was characterized by both players struggling to hold serve, with Fernandez breaking Busca seven times on 14 opportunities, while Busca converted five of her eight break-point chances.
