The Canadian women’s eight rowing team, which is the defending champion, will have to compete in the repechage after placing third in their initial heat on Monday at the Paris Olympic Games. During the race at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, they finished with a time of six minutes 21.31 seconds, trailing only Great Britain, who took first with a time of 6:16.20, and Australia, who secured second place at 6:18.61, while Denmark finished fourth.
In the other heat, Romania established a strong lead, completing the course in 6:12.31. They were followed by the United States with a time of 6:19.00 and Italy in a time of 6:28.47. The top finishers from each heat will move directly to the final on Saturday, while the remaining teams will compete in Thursday's repechage for an additional chance to qualify for the final.
Canada, represented by several returning athletes from their gold medal-winning team at the Tokyo Olympics, entered the Paris Games with high hopes. The team includes coxswain Kristen Kit and rowers Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski, Sydney Payne, and Avalon Wasteneys, alongside Abby Dent, Caileigh Filmer, Maya Meschkuleit, Jessica Sevick, and Kristina Walker.
While Canada has only managed to field two boats in Paris, their performance has been noteworthy, with Jenny Casson and Jill Moffatt advancing to the semi-finals in lightweight women’s double sculls, having secured second place in their repechage earlier in the day.
