The road to the Paris Olympics has taught Katherine and Michelle Plouffe a great deal about perseverance and dedication. The twin sisters, who hail from Edmonton, Alberta, have invested not only their time and effort but also their own finances to develop a three-on-three basketball program for Canada, which has now earned them a spot as the inaugural Canadian team to compete in the Olympics.

Reflecting on their journey, Michelle expressed gratitude for the support they have received along the way, acknowledging that it has been a deeply rewarding experience. The sisters, both seasoned veterans of the traditional Canadian women's basketball squad, transitioned to three-on-three in 2019 after being inspired by the sport's potential and the creativity it offers.

Three-on-three basketball, which is played on half of a basketball court, has distinct rules that create a fast-paced game. Points are awarded differently based on the location of the shot, with two points for outside shots and one point for shots inside the arc. The game can conclude in either 10 minutes or when a team reaches 21 points, presenting a unique challenge compared to traditional five-on-five basketball.

One of their teammates, Paige Crozon, captured the essence of their experience, likening the thrill of competing at the Olympics to playing basketball on the streets with friends. The Plouffe sisters took it upon themselves to establish a national program from scratch, recruiting players, organizing competitive events, and self-funding their training. Katherine emphasized the importance of laying a foundation for the next generation of athletes.

Joining the core group is Kacie Bosch, another talented player who finally embraced the opportunity to be a part of this groundbreaking experience after previously declining offers. Bosch remarked on the privilege of being part of a pioneering team and noted their notable achievements in previous international competitions, including a commendable third place at the FIBA AmeriCup.

With the women's three-on-three basketball competition featuring eight formidable teams, including the defending champions from the United States, expectations are high for an intense tournament. Each team will face all others in pool play commencing on July 30, with medal games set for August 5, creating excitement for both the players and fans. As they prepare to compete, the Plouffe sisters and their teammates remain focused on making their mark on the Olympic stage.
