Russia to Analyze US Military Command in Japan
The Kremlin announced on Monday that it will analyze the recent decision by the United States to establish a new military command in Japan. This new command will report directly to the Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the analysis will be conducted by the Russian military and expressed confidence in their ability to assess the situation. He emphasized that the Kremlin views this as a military matter rather than a political one.
The announcement of the new US military command in Japan came during a meeting in Tokyo between US and Japanese officials, including US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The joint statement released after the meeting identified China's "political, economic, and military coercion" as the "greatest strategic challenge" in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The new command will be headquartered at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo and will be led by a three-star officer reporting to the Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command. The stated purpose of the command is to "facilitate deeper interoperability and cooperation on joint bilateral operations (with Japan) in peacetime and during contingencies."
This development comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and Russia, particularly regarding missile deployments. Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia will no longer observe its moratorium on intermediate-range missiles if the US deploys similar weapons in Germany.
Putin expressed concern that the US deployment could trigger a "Cold War-style missile crisis" and warned that European capitals could become targets for Russian missiles. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed these concerns, stating that the proposed US deployment signifies a return to the Cold War with its direct confrontations.
