Harris Holds First Major Fundraiser as Trump Remarks Spark Controversy
Vice President Kamala Harris held her first major fundraiser since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Addressing over 800 attendees, mostly Democratic donors, Harris outlined her campaign platform and contrasted her record with that of her opponent, former President Donald Trump.
Harris highlighted her record as Attorney General, contrasting her actions against predatory for-profit colleges with Trump's own history of running a similar institution. She also referenced the recent civil verdict finding Trump liable for sexual abuse, drawing on her experience as a prosecutor specializing in such cases.
The Vice President expressed her hope for a debate with Trump, following his withdrawal from a previously agreed-upon second debate. While Trump has indicated openness to a debate hosted by Fox News, Harris remains firm on the original agreement.
Harris pledged to prioritize key issues including voting rights, gun violence, and reproductive rights. She acknowledged the momentum behind her campaign but emphasized the need for continued effort, citing the underdog status of her campaign.
The fundraiser, benefiting the Harris Victory Fund, raised $1.4 million, exceeding the initial goal by more than triple. This event marked the first major political event in the Berkshires since a visit from then-First Lady Michelle Obama in 2012.
Local residents expressed enthusiasm for their city's role in the presidential race, with Harris supporters holding banners advocating for female leadership and bodily autonomy. Meanwhile, some residents displayed support for Trump, while pro-Palestinian protesters voiced their concerns.
