Balancing Tourism with Island Life and Environment

The city of Sado in Niigata Prefecture is preparing for a surge in tourism following the inscription of the Sado Island Gold Mines on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. While this is expected to bring significant economic benefits, the city is also mindful of the need to balance tourism with the lives of residents and environmental conservation.

Estimates suggest that the inscription will increase the number of visitors staying at lodging facilities by 20% and boost the local economy by ¥52 billion. However, the island currently faces challenges in accommodating this influx of tourists, with limited transportation options and accommodation facilities.

To address these issues, the city government is implementing several measures. They are extending the tourism season until November, offering free bicycle rentals, and providing coupons for shopping on the island. Additionally, new bus routes have been established to improve transportation access to the gold mines and other areas of the island.

Beyond infrastructure, the city is also committed to striking a balance between tourism and the preservation of the island's unique environment and cultural heritage. This includes protecting the lives of residents, supporting local agriculture, and safeguarding the crested ibises, a designated special natural treasure.

By carefully managing tourism development, Sado Island can reap the economic benefits of its UNESCO status while ensuring the well-being of its residents and the continued protection of its natural and cultural treasures.
