Authorities Urge Visitors to Nara Park to Respect Wild Deer Following Viral Incident
On July 25, authorities in Nara Park took a strong stance against the mistreatment of the wild deer that inhabit the area, following the circulation of a shocking video showing a man violently kicking one of these protected animals. The deer are a highlight for visitors, who are encouraged to feed them specific rice crackers known as "shika senbei," yet reports of ill-treatment towards these creatures have been increasing recently.
In response to the situation, local officials collaborated with the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation to broadcast their message using loudspeakers throughout the park. They stressed that harming the deer is a prosecutable offense under the Cultural Assets Preservation Law, drawing attention to the fact that these animals are designated as a national natural monument. Approximately 50 individuals, including police and foundation staff, participated in the effort to convey this important message, calling out in multiple languages to ensure that all visitors understand the rules.
The viral video prompted an influx of concerns from the public, leading to more calls to law enforcement regarding the welfare of the deer. Historically, the police had been responding to monthly complaints about tourists engaging in inappropriate behavior, such as riding the deer or feeding them unsuitable food items. For instance, in 2021, a man received a suspended prison sentence for fatally attacking a deer with an ax, highlighting the serious consequences that can result from mistreating these animals.
A 35-year-old Australian visitor expressed disapproval of the violent act shown in the video, emphasizing the need for tourists to observe park regulations closely. Nobuyuki Yamazaki, the secretary-general of the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation, also stressed the importance of promoting awareness and respect for the deer to ensure the well-being of these cherished residents of the park.
