Flash Flood Devastation in Ya'an, Sichuan
A sudden flash flood triggered by heavy rainfall struck Xinhua village in Malie township, Hanyuan county, Ya'an, Sichuan Province, causing immense devastation. As of July 20, 2024, at least 8 people have been confirmed dead, over 30 remain missing, and 412 residents have been safely relocated.
The flood struck around 2:30 am on Saturday, catching many residents asleep and unable to escape. The Xinhua village, situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, is home to thousands of people. The floodwaters swept through the village, leaving a trail of destruction. Houses were destroyed, the riverbed widened, and debris littered the landscape.
A double-arch stone bridge near the village was blocked by trees and debris, causing the water to overflow onto the road and downstream areas. The flood also triggered a mudslide that stretched for several kilometers, causing further damage.
Local authorities have deployed over 1,000 rescue personnel and numerous equipment units to search for missing persons, verify affected areas, and relocate residents. The city of Ya'an has also sent emergency supplies to aid in the relief efforts.
The flash flood has caused significant economic losses, with one resident reporting the loss of over 50 forest musk deer worth millions of yuan. The flood also damaged local infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and water supply.
Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing, and the community is working together to recover from this devastating event.
