The Ministry of State Security in China recently unveiled a short film aimed at the public, encouraging them to enhance their awareness regarding national security. Titled "WeChat Trap," the film is based on a true espionage story where a military enthusiast, named He Li, was tricked by a foreign spy masquerading as an attractive woman on WeChat, a popular messaging app in China.
In the film, it is revealed that the foreign spy used WeChat’s virtual positioning feature to add individuals in close proximity as friends, presenting herself as a student on vacation. He Li, who has a strong military background influenced by his father’s career as an army officer, was excited to connect with this supposed student and quickly developed a friendship with her, unaware of her true intentions.
As their online communication progressed, the spy, known as Yang Qing, posed as someone interested in military topics and requested He’s assistance. He willingly disclosed sensitive information about naval vessels and even sent her photographs of military facilities, under the illusion of helping her with her studies. When Yang expressed continued interest in military plans and other details, He enthusiastically attempted to assist her further, even involving his retired army friend, Chen Zheng.
It was Chen who recognized the warning signs of espionage based on a briefing he had attended, which led He to realize the manipulation he faced. They learned that spies could easily disguise themselves using fake locations and exploit military enthusiasts to extract critical information. Ultimately, He turned himself in to the national authorities, who, after conducting a thorough investigation, decided not to impose any penalties given that he reported the incident and had not committed severe wrongdoing.
The Ministry of State Security has been highlighting various espionage cases in its campaign, urging the public to be alert and proactive in safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining national security.
