Philippines Conducts Humanitarian Resupply to Grounded Warship Under Chinese Supervision
On Saturday, the Philippines dispatched a civilian ship to provide humanitarian supplies to the BRP Sierra Madre, a warship that has been illegally grounded at Ren'ai Jiao. This operation was conducted under the supervision of the China Coast Guard (CCG), which had been informed in advance about the resupply mission. Notably, the Chinese authorities confirmed that the Philippine vessel was only carrying essential living supplies before allowing it to proceed.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated China’s claim to sovereignty over Ren'ai Jiao and the surrounding waters, stating that the country's position on the territorial issue remains unchanged. They expressed hope that the Philippines would uphold its commitments and collaborate with China to manage the situation at sea effectively. Observers noted that the Philippines’ agreement to follow these guidelines indicates a shift towards dialogue after a year of rising tensions.
The arrangement was framed as a response to previous provocations by the Philippines in the South China Sea. Experts suggested that this agreement serves as an important test of whether the Philippines can maintain its commitments amid external pressures, particularly from the United States. Furthermore, discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo highlighted the need for both nations to focus on managing their differences while fostering a stable relationship.
