A former California public school official, Jorge Armando Contreras, was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for embezzling over $16 million from the Magnolia School District in Orange County. Contreras used the stolen funds to finance a lavish lifestyle, purchasing luxury items such as Louis Vuitton bags and expensive tequila.
Contreras, 53, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement, theft, and intentional misapplication of funds from an organization receiving federal funds. He was ordered to pay $16,694,942 in restitution.
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada stated that Contreras' actions were a betrayal of his position and the trust placed in him. Instead of using his role to help disadvantaged children, Contreras enriched himself through fraudulent means.
Authorities have seized approximately $7.7 million in personal and real property linked to the scheme.

Six years for stealing $16 million? That's not justice!

It’s infuriating to see someone exploit vulnerable children and get away with a short sentence.
