ABC News journalist George Stephanopoulos expressed regret for his conversation with a passerby, during which he appeared to say that he doesn't believe President Joe Biden can serve another four years.
TMZ published a video of the encounter, which reportedly occurred on a New York City street. In the video, Stephanopoulos is asked, "Do you think Biden should step down?" Stephanopoulos appears to respond, "I don't think he can serve four more years," although the audio is somewhat unclear.
Stephanopoulos interviewed Biden on Friday in Biden's first televised interview since a challenging debate performance raised concerns about his health and the viability of his re-election campaign.
"Earlier today I responded to a passerby. I shouldn't have," Stephanopoulos said in a statement released by ABC News spokesman Brooks Lancaster on Tuesday night.
In a separate statement, ABC News said, "George expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News."
Stephanopoulos' interview with Biden took place about a week after Biden's debate performance, which surprised and alarmed some Democrats, who began questioning his ability to win the November election or serve another term.
Biden has rejected calls to step aside. On Monday, he reiterated that he will remain in the race and expressed his belief that he is the best person to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.
