President Droupadi Murmu recently showcased her love for sports by playing badminton with renowned player Saina Nehwal at the Badminton Court in Rashtrapati Bhavan. This gesture aligns with India's growing prominence in badminton, especially with female players excelling on the global stage. As part of the 'Her Story - My Story' lecture series featuring women Padma Awardees, Saina Nehwal, a distinguished Indian athlete honored with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, will be speaking at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre soon.
Saina Nehwal, originally from Haryana, gained attention early in her career by clinching the BWF World Junior Championships in 2008. Despite participating in the Olympics the same year, it took her four more years to secure a medal. Notably, she achieved the distinction of being the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic quarter-finals and the first to win a BWF Super Series event in 2009.
Recognized for her outstanding contributions, Saina received the Arjuna Award in 2009 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2010. She has been a pivotal figure in elevating badminton's status in India, showcasing remarkable performances in various international competitions and holding the coveted world No.1 ranking in the sport. Saina's achievements have not only made her a sporting icon but have also inspired numerous athletes and young individuals in the country to pursue success in their respective fields.
