Crocodile Named One Eye Attempts to Climb Fence for Food at Australian Wildlife Park

Visitors at the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park near Broome, Australia, were left stunned when "One Eye," a crocodile, tried to scale a fence in an attempt to reach its feeders. The reptile, named One Eye due to having lost an eye in a fight, struggled to hoist its entire body over the fence because of its short legs. A visitor named Sophia Armstrong captured the moment on TikTok, showing the crocodile with its upper body hanging over the fence, while tour guides rushed to coax it back into its enclosure.

Owen Douglas, whose grandfather founded the park, explained that crocodiles like One Eye have learned over time that hopping over the fence could provide quicker access to their food during feeding time. The park's website boasts showcasing some of Australia's largest crocodiles during feeding tours, emphasizing the intelligence of these animals in finding ways to expedite their mealtime. This incident is not the first of its kind, as there have been previous reports of crocodiles attempting unusual feats like climbing trees and waterfalls.

The crocodile population has significantly increased in Australia's tropical north since being protected by law in the 1970s, with numbers growing from 3,000 to over 100,000. Due to this surge in crocodile numbers, concerns have been raised about potential conflicts between humans and crocodiles, especially after a tragic incident where a 12-year-old child was killed by a crocodile in the Northern Territory. As authorities grapple with managing the increasing crocodile population, there is a heightened awareness of the need to ensure public safety in regions where these reptiles thrive.
