Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic representative from New York, has reaffirmed her support for President Joe Biden as the party's presumptive nominee. This comes amid growing concerns within the party about Biden's mental fitness for office.
Ocasio-Cortez made her statement on Monday evening outside the Capitol, telling reporters that "Joe Biden is our nominee, he is not leaving this race, he is in this race and I support him."
Her statement comes as several Democratic lawmakers have publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the race, citing concerns about his age and his performance in the recent presidential debate. However, Ocasio-Cortez says that she has spoken with Biden and that he is committed to staying in the race.
She also pointed out that no Republican has called for Donald Trump to step down, despite his recent conviction on 34 felony charges in New York. Ocasio-Cortez believes that the focus should be on defeating Trump, and that Biden is the best candidate to do that.
She also outlined some of the policies that she believes Biden should focus on in order to win in November, including expanding Medicare and Social Security, providing rent or mortgage alleviation, and continuing to work on student loan relief.
Other lawmakers, such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, have also voiced their support for Biden and have highlighted his policies and accomplishments in office.
