Prime Minister Kishida Calls for Hospital Ships Preparation Plan
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently instructed relevant Cabinet ministers to develop a plan for the deployment of hospital ships by fiscal 2025, focusing on using these vessels during disasters or outbreaks of infectious diseases. The government's task force convened its initial meeting to discuss utilizing ships as bases for medical operations at sea in times of crises, aiming to have a detailed plan in place by the end of the year. The proposed hospital ships are designed to not only transport disaster victims to safety but also to offer medical treatment and support at ports near affected areas.
Kishida highlighted the importance of utilizing ships for aiding disaster-stricken regions, citing past instances such as the Jan. 1 Noto Peninsula earthquake where ships played a crucial role in providing assistance and transporting supplies. The government's vision includes establishing hospital ships to enhance efficient medical response capabilities, recognizing the strategic advantage of approaching disaster zones from the sea. Despite the initial plan to utilize privately-owned car ferries, the government aims to eventually acquire hospital ships and is focusing on securing budget allocations, exploring international best practices, and enhancing workforce training for future large-scale disaster preparedness.
