Bright Vision Community Hospital, which was temporarily used as a COVID-19 care facility during the pandemic, is now undergoing a transformation into a psychiatric nursing home. Ownership of the hospital was transferred to SingHealth, Singapore's largest healthcare group, in 2011 due to management challenges. The new psychiatric nursing home is expected to have wards catering to older adults with dementia, individuals with learning disabilities, and those transitioning back to the community after receiving care.

Associate Professor Andy Ho, head of psychology at Nanyang Technological University's School of Social Sciences, envisions specialized wards within the nursing home for individuals in transition, needing extra care before integrating back into society. Currently, Singapore has eight nursing homes with psychiatric beds, with a combined capacity of approximately 1,400 psychiatric beds, including facilities like St Andrew's Nursing Home, Sunlove Home, and Surya Home in the Buangkok area. Beyond this, there are plans to develop a psychiatric rehabilitation home alongside two new psychiatric nursing homes. Public health specialist Jeremy Lim highlighted the need for increased psychiatric care capacity, pointing out the current inadequacy of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) with nearly 2,000 psychiatric beds.

Dr. Lim emphasized the importance of repurposing Bright Vision Community Hospital to meet urgent mental health needs post-pandemic, enabling a quicker ramp-up in capacity compared to building purpose-built facilities. He anticipates rapid utilization of the facility due to the growing mental health crisis and increased awareness leading to more people seeking diagnosis and support. Associate Professor Ho acknowledged the decreasing stigma around mental health issues, noting a shift towards greater acceptance of services and help-seeking behaviors within the community. He predicts a rising demand for mental health services in the future, reflecting the evolving landscape of mental healthcare in Singapore.
