Five-Set Matches Reach Record High
The 2023 Wimbledon Championships have witnessed a surge in five-set battles, with Daniil Medvedev's victory over Jannik Sinner marking the 36th men's match to reach the full distance. This surpasses the previous record set in the Open Era.
Medvedev's grueling four-hour victory propelled him into the semi-finals, where he will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz himself endured a five-set marathon against Frances Tiafoe in the third round.
With five more men's singles matches remaining, the possibility of further five-set encounters remains high. When asked about the abundance of lengthy matches, Medvedev attributed it to the unique nature of grass court tennis.
"On grass, it's very tough to win in straight sets," Medvedev explained. "One break can decide the outcome, and a single error can cost you the set."
The longest men's singles match of the tournament thus far was Thanasi Kokkinakis' five-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, a contest that stretched for four hours and 38 minutes.
