China Aims for Diving Sweep at Paris Olympics
China, a powerhouse in diving, has set its sights on a historic sweep of all eight gold medals at the Paris Olympics. This would mark the first time a country has achieved such a feat at a Summer Games since the United States in 1952.
While Chinese divers dominated the first two world championships after the Tokyo Olympics, other nations showed promise at the recent event in Qatar, claiming four gold medals. This suggests that the competition in Paris will be fierce.
China will send a full-strength team to Paris, featuring a mix of experienced veterans and rising stars. Among them is Quan Hongchan, the 14-year-old sensation who won gold in Tokyo. She is expected to face stiff competition from teammate Chen Yuxi, the silver medalist from the previous Olympics.
The duo is dubbed China's "double insurance" for Paris, with high expectations for them to win both the synchronized and individual 10m platform titles. "It doesn't matter which of us gets the gold," Quan said. "As long as it is China's, it's okay."
A similar scenario unfolds in the women's 3m springboard, where world number one Chen Yiwen has dominated this year. However, her teammate Chang Yani, recovering from a shoulder injury, could pose a challenge. The pair, best friends and both first-time Olympians, have been a formidable force in the 3m synchronized event.
Chang's injury could impact her performance and the pair's chances of winning China's first gold in Paris. "I am not a gifted athlete and I really need to keep training to stay where I want to be," she said. "Three weeks rest is the longest I've ever had in my life and this is a really heavy blow to me."
The men's events are expected to be more competitive, with several strong contenders from other nations. However, China remains a force to be reckoned with, and its divers will be aiming to continue their dominance in Paris.
