Former Senator Jim Inhofe Passes Away at 89
Jim Inhofe, a prominent figure in Oklahoma politics for over six decades, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 89. He had suffered a stroke over the Fourth of July holiday.
Inhofe, a staunch conservative, served as a U.S. Senator for Oklahoma from 1994 to 2023. He was known for his strong support of defense spending and his denial of human-caused climate change. He frequently criticized mainstream science on climate change, calling it "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."
Inhofe was a powerful advocate for Oklahoma's five military installations and a vocal supporter of congressional earmarks. He secured federal funding for local road and bridge projects and criticized efforts to limit earmarks.
He was a strong backer of President Donald Trump and served as chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee during the Trump administration. Inhofe also played a key role in securing millions of dollars to clean up a former mining area in northeast Oklahoma that was contaminated with lead.
In 2021, Inhofe defied some in his party by voting to certify Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election. He also voted against convicting Trump at both of his impeachment trials.
Inhofe was a commercial-rated pilot and flight instructor with over 50 years of flying experience. He is survived by his wife, Kay, three children, and several grandchildren.
