Robin Roberts Opens Up About Coming Out and Being Christian
In a candid conversation on entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author Jamie Kern Lima's podcast, "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," Robin Roberts, the beloved host of ABC's "Good Morning America," reflected on her decision to come out to her audience in 2013 and the internal struggle she faced as a Christian woman.
The two-part interview delved into Roberts' life, exploring her journey of success, self-worth, and self-love. She openly discussed her fears of being rejected for her dual identities, her experience interviewing President Obama about marriage equality, and her battles with health challenges.
One of the most poignant moments came when Roberts revealed her initial hesitation to come out publicly. "It's not the 'Robin Roberts Show,' it's 'Good Morning America,'" she explained. "There are so many people whose livelihoods depend on the success of our show. And so, if I do something that hurts the show, that hurts them."
She further elaborated, "I would walk down the street with Amber, and if somebody saw us, I would introduce her. I wasn't trying to hide, but yet, I wasn't ready to fully... And part of it is, and I've never said this before, part of it is because of my Christianity."
Roberts confessed that she feared being ostracized for being both "gay and a Christian." "I was afraid that people, they think you can't be gay and a Christian. And I am. I am, and I was so fearful that I would be shunned," she admitted.
However, she received a heartwarming letter of support from the National Office at the Presbyterian Church after her announcement. "Fully supportive," she emphasized. "And then I think about all those years I wasted, worried, needless worry."
"You know everything about me. And I have nothing to hide and to still be, still be embraced. I am blessed and highly favored. And I'm so grateful."
"The Jamie Kern Lima Show" has garnered significant attention, reaching the #1 spot in Apple Podcasts' Self-Improvement category and ranking among the top 15 podcasts overall within its first two weeks.
