Japan and UNIDO Partner to Promote Solar and Hydrogen Power in Africa
Japan has been identified as the "best partner" for Africa in the development of solar and hydrogen power, according to the head of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). UNIDO Director-General Gerd Mueller made this statement during a visit to Tokyo, where he signed a joint declaration with Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ken Saito.
The declaration highlights the long-standing collaboration between UNIDO and the Japanese government. Notably, Japan contributed a record 50 billion yen ($311 million) to UNIDO last year. These funds are being used to support businesses operating in Ukraine and developing countries across the Global South.
Mueller emphasized the importance of private sector investment in Africa's energy sector. He believes that Japan, with its expertise in solar and hydrogen technologies, is well-positioned to play a key role in this development. The joint declaration between UNIDO and Japan signals a commitment to working together to bring clean and sustainable energy solutions to Africa.
