Beijing, through President Xi Jinping, reiterated the value of advancing cooperation and exchanges in the realm of green development, noting the positive impact it can have on sustainable economic and social progress while fostering harmony between humanity and nature. The occasion that marked this commitment was the Green Development Forum of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries, which took place in Qingdao, Shandong province, where President Xi made a pledge in a congratulatory letter. President Xi stressed that safeguarding the environment and advancing green development is a consensus shared among SCO countries, acknowledging the efforts made so far in creating a beautiful China by adhering to the philosophy that treasures like clear waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.
China's leadership role within the SCO was evident as the country assumed the rotating presidency for 2024-25 following the Astana summit in Kazakhstan. President Xi Jinping highlighted the SCO as a blueprint for a novel form of international relations and regional cooperation, urging collective efforts to uphold the Shanghai Spirit. The President expressed China's commitment to working with all member states to reinforce unity and coordination, advance green development, foster common development, and strengthen the SCO community for a shared future. This vision was encapsulated within the theme of the two-day forum, "Joining hands in green development, and promoting harmony between man and nature," which served as a platform for SCO countries to concentrate on green development, particularly important this year as it is designated the SCO Year of Ecology. Additionally, President Xi proposed designating 2025 as the SCO Year of Sustainable Development to encourage members to focus on cultivating new growth avenues.
