A Chinese national residing in Japan was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly vandalizing a stone pillar at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. The suspect is accused of spray-painting the word "toilet" in English on the pillar, which is engraved with the shrine's name near the entrance. The incident occurred on May 31st.
The Tokyo police's Public Security Bureau has also issued arrest warrants for two additional Chinese nationals in connection with the vandalism. The two individuals departed Japan for China on June 1st.
The Yasukuni Shrine has been a source of diplomatic tension with China and other Asian countries due to its enshrinement of Japan's wartime leaders, who were convicted as war criminals by an international tribunal following World War II. The shrine honors over 2.4 million war dead, including the convicted leaders.
A video circulating on Chinese social media purportedly shows a man urinating on the stone pillar before spray-painting the word "toilet" in red. The authenticity of the video has not been confirmed.
