Immigration in China Sees Significant Increase in First Half of 2024

China's immigration authorities witnessed a substantial surge in entries and exits during the first half of 2024, with a total of 287 million recorded, marking a 70.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a remarkable 152.7% jump in international arrivals to China.

Mainland residents accounted for the majority of entries and exits, with 137 million, followed by residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan with 121 million, and foreigners with 29.22 million. Notably, the number of foreign nationals entering China through various ports reached 14.635 million, representing a 152.7% year-on-year increase.

The implementation of visa-free policies for passport holders from New Zealand, Australia, and Poland further contributed to the rise in foreign arrivals. These citizens can now enter China without a visa for up to 15 days for purposes such as business, tourism, visiting relatives, and transit.

The immigration authorities also reported a significant increase in the issuance of ordinary passports to Chinese citizens, with a 23.2% year-on-year growth to 12.34 million. Additionally, permits issued to mainland residents for entry and exit to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan increased by 7.8% to 46.152 million.

On the enforcement front, immigration authorities investigated and handled 18,000 cases related to border management crimes, apprehending over 34,000 suspects. This resulted in the deportation of more than 10,000 foreigners.

The authorities also cracked down on illegal activities such as drug trafficking, firearms, explosives, and smuggling in border areas. They seized 786 firearms, 26,000 bullets, and confiscated smuggled goods worth 6.4 billion yuan. These efforts aimed to maintain the security and stability of China's national borders.
