Chinese Police Crack Down on Online Gambling During Euro 2024
While Chinese fans have been enjoying the Euro 2024 championship, police across the country have been busy dismantling online gambling rings that used the tournament as a cover.
In Beijing, authorities shut down three gangs on June 26, arresting 21 suspects and seizing electronic devices and bank cards used in their illegal operations.
In Chengdu, police apprehended two individuals on June 27 for their involvement in a betting ring worth over 400,000 yuan ($55,000). One suspect, Liu, acted as an agent for an overseas betting website, while the other, Song, recruited gamblers through a WeChat group.
Meanwhile, in Dujiangyan, another city in Sichuan, police dismantled a five-person group that used overseas websites to organize Euro 2024 gambling.
These crackdowns serve as a reminder to fans not to engage in illegal betting. Police have also issued warnings about scams related to the tournament, including fake commemorative merchandise and fraudulent prize notifications.
Authorities urge fans to watch the games responsibly, avoid gambling, and protect their personal information.
