China and Tajikistan Strengthen Partnership, Focus on Trade and Connectivity

China and Tajikistan have reaffirmed their commitment to developing a comprehensive strategic partnership, with a focus on trade, connectivity, and critical minerals. During a three-day state visit to Tajikistan, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed a joint statement outlining their shared goals.

The two nations agreed to prioritize high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, aligning their development strategies to support each other's modernization efforts. China expressed its willingness to expand imports of high-quality products from Tajikistan and deepen cooperation on connectivity.

In 2023, China was Tajikistan's second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $3.92 billion. Investment from China to Tajikistan totaled $4.1 billion between 2007 and 2023, with over 700 Chinese companies operating in the Central Asian country.

Xi Jinping emphasized China's unwavering support for Tajikistan's development path and its efforts to safeguard its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also stressed the importance of people-to-people exchanges and security cooperation, including joint efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.

On the Afghan issue, China and Tajikistan agreed to continue enhancing communication and coordination, encouraging the Afghan interim government to pursue inclusive governance, focus on development, and combat terrorism.

Tajik President Rahmon highlighted the visit as a "key event and a milestone" in bilateral ties, praising China's loyalty and reliability as a partner. He expressed his gratitude for China's aid in building the new Tajik parliament and government buildings.

Rahmon also emphasized Tajikistan's firm adherence to the one-China principle and its support for China's efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed hope for attracting more Chinese investment across various sectors, including light industry, food, energy, agriculture, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence.

The visit by President Xi Jinping and the signing of the joint statement mark a significant step forward in the China-Tajikistan partnership, with a focus on trade, connectivity, and mutual support for development and security.
